How To Trim Moving Costs – Besides Negotiations

Blog

Negotiating a moving quote is one of the most common measures people take when they want favorable moving costs. However, there is only so much you can achieve via negotiations; you will need other tactics to drive the price down further. Here are other things you can do to make the move inexpensive:

Get Rid Of Things You Don't Need

If you have been living in the same house for a long time, there is a high chance that you have gathered and stored many items that you don't necessarily need. Moving gives you the chance to declutter your home and get rid of unnecessary things. That will reduce the number of boxes involved in the move and lead to lower moving costs. As an added advantage, it will also save you storage space in your destination.

Handle Some of the Services on Your Own

The moving company can handle your entire move without any input for you. They can provide you with packing materials, pack your belongings, load them on the moving truck, and unload and arrange them at your destination. However, the more you want them to handle the more it will cost you. Save on your moving costs by handling some of the services on your own.

Use Recycled Packing Supplies

The more items you want to move the more packing materials you will need, and this also inflates your moving cost. However, you don't have to buy all your packing supplies and materials brand new from the store; you probably have a few items you can repurpose to use as packing materials. Even if you don't have some boxes in the house, you may be able to get some for free from your workplace, friends or even the free section of Craigslist.

Include Everything in the Quote

Another important tip is to include everything when requesting the moving quote. For example, tell the moving company if you want them to bring packing supplies and pack the belongings for you or if your driveway is too narrow and they can't park their moving truck there. This is important because you won't be able to negotiate for any services or materials you may spring on the movers on the actual moving day.

If you are planning a move anytime soon, the above measures should help you get a favorable price for it. Don't forget to consider other aspects of the movers, such as their reliability and professionalism, in addition to the cost issues. Choosing the Right Storage Unit Doesn't Have to Be Difficult

While I lived in a small town my entire life, in my early 20s I decided to move to a big bustling city. Since the cost of living was so low in my hometown, I was able to afford a rental home. However, with my income, I realized I could only afford a studio apartment in my new city. I did not want to get rid of all of my furniture and belongings that would not fit into my new small apartment, especially my prized collection of antique dolls! I was worried my dolls would not fare well in storage, but I learned that any collectible can be kept in great condition when prepared properly for storage and kept in the right unit. I decided to share what I have learned about choosing storage units and keeping collectibles in great condition while in storage on my new blog!
